P.E. Philosophy
ST. MATTHEW P.E.=DEVELOPING PHYSICALLY LITERATE STUDENTS
physical literacy: the ability to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person

The goal of quality physical education is to have students be active and healthy for a lifetime. This is achieved through teaching students correct movement skills, giving them knowledge about when to perform these skills (strategy), and making it fun to help them value physical activity. It is the physical educator’s main role to help all students be engaged in and appreciate activity so lifelong fitness will occur. Another key component to being a successful physical education teacher is to educate students across all three learning domains: psychomotor (physical), cognitive (mental), and affective (emotional). To ensure that my students get a high quality program, I will make sure I am constantly evaluating and updating my teaching styles and methods to best serve the students. In my curriculum I plan on serving the needs of all my students by having a mix of team sports, individual sports, and fitness and health components. Traditionally, P.E. was focused just on team sports. But realistically, the public generally stops playing team sports regularly after college. Therefore, I believe other activities and sports need to be implemented into the physical education curriculum so that students are active in their school years and beyond.
Physical education is not just a one size fits all kind of subject. To accommodate all learners, I believe it is necessary for the teacher to use a variety of different styles. To keep things fresh for students I teach different units in different ways. For a sport that more students are familiar with, I may try a Sports Education approach where students take an active part in learning through taking up different roles as coach, player, manager, and more. Besides using different teaching methods, I think it is important to utilize technology in physical education. Videos to understand movement concepts, pedometers, and different apps are just a few of the ways I can reach a variety of different learners. Not only do students learn in different ways, they also develop skills differently. To provide for all my students, I think it is necessary to have extension and application tasks for each activity in my lessons. This way, if an activity is too easy or too hard for a student, it can be easily modified to fit every skill level. Also, I will make sure to have a variety of equipment so each student feels comfortable with the item they are using.
A theme throughout this philosophy statement has been keeping students active and enjoying physical activity. This is the physical educator’s main goal and I believe that striving continually towards this goal will result in a fun-filled, active, and healthy P.E. class.
